Installation hassles of RedHat Linux 8.0
Although I had installed and used Linux before also, but my real test was yet to come, when I installed RedHat Linux 8.0 on Intel 845 chipset motherboard having PCTEL HSP56 Micromodem. My installation was successful without any problem. I had set GUI as default for boot mode.
My Initial problem with display
My system started with no problem, and it showed a login screen in GUI mode. On logging in, it started GNOME. But the the display was set at 640x480. I tried to set the GUI mode to 1024x768. System did not test the mode before setting the mode. It told me that the new mode will become when I restart X. I restarted my X server my pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del. But to my shock, I found that all the display was gone. All the lights of my LG Studioworks 45V monitor started blinking. My computer hanged and I thought that my monitor has been damaged. But when I hard rebooted my computer, I found that my monitor has not been damaged. System started normally initially, but as soon as it started X, the same problem appeared again. I was struck with this problem, because I had set the boot mode to be GUI. So, it was not possible to log into the system without starting X server. I rebooted it again and again with no progress. Then I saw that during booting, it provided an option for interactive startup by pressing 'I'. I used this option. On pressing 'I', system started to ask before starting any service. When it asked to start 'xfs', I replied in negative. In the absence of xfs, X server crashed. It tried to restart the X server 3 times before dropping into command mode, stating that there was some problem with my X-Server. Then I logged into my root account and then started hunting for the configuration file of X. I found it and changed display mode to 640x480 again. Then, to be on the safer side, I opened the /etc/inittab file and set the init level to 3 (Command prompt) instead of 5 (GUI mode). Now, I restarted the computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. This time, my computer started in the text mode by default. after logging in, I typed the command "startx". It started my X server successfully.
The PCTEL HSP56 Micromedem issue
I decided to leave the issue of GUI at it is and go for the more necessary thing, that was connecting to Internet. I opened the "kppp". But when I tried to query modem, it did not find my modem. I strated to searching internet for the PCTEL HSP56 Micromodem. after a lot of googleing, I found a driver at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il . But I was unable to install this modem. Whenever I did an "insmod " as directed into the driver documentation, it gave an error that the driver has been compiled with the gcc version 2. But the current kernel has been compiled with gcc version 3. So, module will taint the kernel and it is not advisable. Then I knew that how being too much up-to-date can also be harmful. By the way, I continued my search on the Internet for a solution. Then I found a mini-Howto (Not really so mini) on the internet. This How-To really helped me in configuring my modem. By going through the steps provide in this How-To, I was able to configure my modem and connect to Internet.
AC-97 Sound issue
After the internet connectivity, came the next issue. that was "SOUND". I found that my system was not able to play sound. I had an onboard AC-97 sound on Intel 845 chipset motherboard. Again the place to find the solution was same. That was Internet! after much searching, I found a comment given on this issue by Allen Cox at a technical forum. It directed me to a http://www.princeton.edu/~nvachhar/random.html . This link really helped me and I got a driver a replacement module of "i810_audio.o". On overwriting the existing module and restating the computer, I was able to hear the sound.
Solution of Display problem
Now, after having solved the internet connectivity and sound issues, I was really confident of solving rest of issues. I again took up the GUI problem, which I had left in the beginning. I started searching for the driver on internet. I really found one on intel website. This driver solved all my display problems and now I am able to switch between multiple display modes safely.
Still remaining issue
This way, I solved my installation hassles of RedHat Linux 8.0. But still there is a problem which I have not been able to solve. When I try to connect to the internet, sometimes my computer hangs. All indicators of my keyboard start blinking and everything gets struck there and there is no option other than to hard reboot the system. This problem also appears to be ISP specific, as it occurs more oftenly with one ISP and less with other ISP.
I have also given this problem on sourceforge.net discussion forum. If any one has solution to this problem, please contact me on my e- mail : shuklasp@gmail.com .
